I¹ve been going to BI forever. Here¹s what I¹ve learned. So far, you

rarely see anyone else kiting. So access remains pretty wide open.

SW is the prevailing wind. The geography and the thermals across the

New Harbor accelerate the wind a good 10 kts on SW. Look for a

kick around 1:30.

The east facing beach is packed with families on sunny days, and

although I used to windsurf there on SW (excellent side off waves)

It¹s not cool for kiting that wind direction.

The south side of the island has 100 ft cliffs, it could work WSW....

but real sketchy...hit Black Rock for good surfing.

The New Harbor is a no brainer. Find Andy¹s Way and walk to the right,

low tide is best. The launch is a bit onshore, but there¹s nothing hard

downwind...Respect the clammers. The problem is it¹s often windy,

but it get¹s gusty.

So I started looking for a west side alternative...Coast Guard Rd has

an excellent launch (Charleston Beach) but if it¹s SSW it get screwed

up by the cliffs up wind...SO, I discovered Dump Rd...(all the way to

the end turn right and park, walk or 4WD to the second cove) It sounds

bad but it¹s actually one of the most remote beautiful spots on the

island with a 2 mile beach stretching down wind toward the north light.

the wind is super steady. Bring your audience, there is nobody there.

When your fortunate enough to get a NE to SE day with waves East facing

beaches are a blast...the wind usually thins out the crowd....I¹ve also

ridden at ³Cow Cove² extreme north end on a big east day the waves

wrap in nicely....
